Meet The Living Room Cinema team

Claire Beswick, our Founder, is a Liphook local and a veteran of the cinema exhibition industry. Named one of the Top 50 Women in Global Cinema, her 15-year career has spanned several cinema chains including ODEON Cinemas Group and Curzon Cinemas

What made you want to start The Living Room Cinema?

Isn’t it THE dream for anyone working in cinema?! I’d pretty much gotten everything out of my previous roles and felt that bigger things were on the horizon. But instead of running someone else’s company I decided I’d like to start my own. The local area has been crying out for a cinema – there’s not one within 20 minutes and not a quality cinema for miles – and the building became available at the time I was starting to have these thoughts. The rest is history.

Who would you want to play you in a film of your life?

Cate Blanchett, no question. Versatile, elegant, talented… haha. And we share initials!

What cinema experience did you have growing up that impacted your life?

I was fascinated by Hollywood growing up and when I was 16 I dragged my family to LA. Not simply content with the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Manns Chinese Theater etc., I organised studio tours and we visited sets and backlots. From that moment there was no other industry I was going to work in

If you could live in any cinematic era, which would you choose?

Tricky. I love the Hollywood Glamour of the 1950’s, but I’d also be right at home in a 1920’s period drama, or the New York scene. Can I live in a specific movie? The Great Gatsby, please.

Asa Brennan, our General Manager, has spent his career running multiplex cinemas, and has come to us from his previous role as Multi-Site General Manager of Vue Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus in London’s West End

What made you want to work at The Living Room Cinema?

2021 marked 20 years of me working in the cinema industry. My last role working in London’s West End was fantastic but difficult whilst navigating the challenges of the pandemic. As I am originally from the south coast, the plan was always to settle in a new position to be nearer to friends and family and when this opportunity arose I would have been mad to turn it down. To be able to carry on doing what I love so close to home is a dream come true.

Who would you want to play you in a film of your life?

Tom Hanks as he is well respected in his profession and everyone likes him!

What cinema experience did you have growing up that impacted your life?

When I was 10 years old my parents took my younger brother and I to see Jurassic Park at the Ritz cinema in Gosport which is sadly no longer there. I remember the excitement leading up to going, the smell of fresh popcorn and the cinema being packed to the rafters. We were sat in the front row and as the opening credits started I was entirely transported, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and hearing from the enormous screen. Dad had to take my brother out when T-Rex arrived, but I distinctly remember leaving and knowing that film would always be a dominant force in my life.

If you could live in any cinematic era, which would you choose?

50’s Hollywood I think. I’ve always enjoyed movies from that era and the stars it produced like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford – I’ve always wondered what it would be like to live in that town at that time and how exciting it would be!

Rosie Mulford, our Local Marketing and Membership Executive, who many of you may have met at the Haslemere Christmas Market, has come to us from a content, communications and PR role at Secret Escapes

What made you want to work at The Living Room Cinema?

I moved to Liphook in late 2020 and from the moment I knew I was moving to the area, I was keeping tabs on the progression of the cinema. When I saw the advert for the Local Marketing and Membership Executive role, it was a no-brainer. It’s such an exciting project, with so much opportunity to impact the lives of everyone in the community. I was also blown away by Claire’s passion, and it just made me really want to come on board.

Who would you want to play you in a film of your life?

This is such a tough one. In a dream world, I think Emma Stone would play a great me. I’d also take Daisy Ridley.

What cinema experience did you have growing up that impacted your life?

As cliche as it is, watching the Harry Potter films as a child was probably my most impactful cinematic experience. I remember so clearly waiting for them to come out, heading to the cinema on opening day with my Dad and just being in awe of the magic of each and every one. I read the books religiously as a child, so I think the films were my first real experience of seeing something I loved so much come to life.

If you could live in any cinematic era, which would you choose?

I would love to go back to the 60s and experience the making of Westerns in their heyday. I’m fascinated by the frontier, most at home in the deserts of Arizona, and hold a love for anything Western or Neo-Western, so seeing the origins of the genre would be amazing.
